Faculty celebrate their seniors with tributes

They couldn’t do it in person, so they did the next best thing.

Faculty and administrators in several disciplines sent their seniors off on the next phase of their lives this May with gifts and presentations that were congratulatory and celebratory.

The heartfelt, sometimes funny, messages came in all forms. Most were accompanied by music, some featured slideshows, and others included video within the video. In some instances, the graduates extended their own thanks and thoughts.

But in this respect the messages were the same: In the midst of adversity, you persevered, you are special to us, and you will always be a Friar.

  • The Department of Political Science sent honor society inductees their medallions, cords, and certificates. Dr. Joseph P. Cammarano, associate professor of political science and of public and community service studies, personally delivered them to graduates in Rhode Island, using a bullhorn to announce his arrival to the students and their neighbors. The department also held a virtual pizza party with about 25 seniors in lieu of their usual senior reception. Cammarano coordinated delivery of 22 pizzas to their homes in six different states. Eight faculty and 12 alumni joined the call to congratulate the seniors and share good wishes and advice, particularly on the job market.

  • Dr. Yinsheng Wan, professor of biology, and his wife, Dongqin Yang, sent gifts to the seniors in two of Wan’s courses, Cell Signaling and Physiology. Wan included an artwork with the phrase “Education leads to prosperity,” in Chinese calligraphy and Latin. “As your professor, I am as proud as your parents for your great achievements during your four years at Providence College,” he wrote in an accompanying note. “My wife and I have decided to send a graduation gift to all seniors in my class to join your parents in the event of celebration of your graduation from PC.”
  • Faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry also honored their seniors with a virtual reception.

Please consider a gift to The Fund for Providence College to make it possible for all students to continue to experience the value of a PC education.
